About CAHA

Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) formed the Center for Animal and Human Health in Appalachia (CAHA) at the DeBusk Veterinary Teaching Center in Harrogate, TN and Lee County, Virginia, to focus on animal and public health issues in Appalachia. Our veterinary school is devoted to the mission of improving animal and human healthcare in the Appalachian region. The mission of CAHA is to improve animal health and public health in the Appalachian region through five initiatives.

Mission

CAHA's goal is to inform and pull together innovative ideas to help the veterinary profession, human healthcare, government and higher education better meet the acute needs of the people and animals of Appalachia. CAHA’s mission includes:

  1. Research and Scholarship: Engage in research related to animal and public health issues impacting the Appalachian region. 
  2. Student Engagement: Provide veterinary students with access to research and collaboration opportunities within CAHA. 
  3. Conferences and Workshops: Offer education to raise awareness and advance knowledge of animal and public health issues.
  4. Advocacy for One Health Issues: Support public education and advocacy on animal, environmental, and public health issues affecting the Appalachian region, including the expanding One Health practice on LMU's campus and in the local community. 
  5. Community Education Programs: Create community education programs using LMU-CVM facilities and online tools.

CAHA’s advisory board includes over 20 individuals including representatives from LMU, UK VDL, state veterinary organizations, AVMA, practicing regional veterinarians, and the National Association of Federal Veterinarians.
